We'll Start a Fire and Burn Some Bridges
Currently Playing: Funeral for a Friend - Escape Artists Never Die
I didn't realize "Funeral for a Friend" was an Elton John song until a few days ago. Eh, you learn something new every day.
There's a few random things I'm feel like writing about since I haven't updated in a awhile, so here goes:
Kevin, John. Jon. And I played in the 3 on 3 Intramural Basketball League this quarter. Our record ended up being something like 7 wins and 7 losses. This was a huge improvement over last year, when we went 1 win - 3 losses every week. Our record actually might have been a lot better if we showed up for all the games, but we didn't show up one week due to unforeseen circumstances (i.e. a tree falling down). Our mediocre record did however, ensure us a spot in the playoffs, which, coincidentally enough, were slated to start right when I got off work. This was unfortunate because I didn't have time to eat before work and all I do at work on Sunday is sit on my ass for five hours. So after work, I went straight to RIMAC, and the game started a minute or two after that. I didn't have time to even warm up, which left me gasping for breath after a few plays. After ten minutes of playing I couldn't take it anymore and substituted out to get some water. This ended up being a bad decision because Jon jammed his finger, and according to the team we were playing, there was a rule that prevented more than one substitution per game. We ended up losing 10 to 17. I'm not saying we would have won if I had been able to substitute in, but you never know. When Jon got injured I think the score was tied at 9 to 9 or so. Oh well. I just hope we get to play 5 on 5 next quarter.
Last Friday I played poker with a bunch of people. Losing one spot out of the money for the last couple times in a row had led me to the conclusion that I cannot play poker when I want sleep. Especially when there are ten people playing and it takes over 4 hours to decide a winner. This time, I decided to experiment with a more aggressive playing style. It started out well. I eliminated three people in the first 45 minutes or so. However, I got greedy with the large chip lead I had built up, and started gambling on hands that I normally would have thrown away in a heartbeat. Sometimes it worked out; the most notable of which was a 2-3 offsuit that somehow turned into a two pair. Of course, as inevitably follows gambling of any sort, I lost my chip lead and eventually lost the rest of my chips. Lesson learned: playing aggressively leads to earlier sleep time.
One last thing I want to talk about: I got a new job. I'm going to be working as a laboratory assistant at this small laboratory called Dermatrends out on Sorrento Valley Road. They concentrate on the transdermal permeability of various drugs. Translation: they are trying to find the best way to get drugs through the skin via patches and such. It is a really small company, with only three laboratory technicians and one PhD consultant. Naturally, I won't be doing any of important stuff. I'm supposed to start out preparing solutions and transferring various things around the lab and eventually move onto actually handling the experiments. Hey, it beats moving books around all day while trying to drown out my boss's incessant yelling at every little thing anyone does even a little to her unliking. Plus, it's fewer hours and it pays more. Yay!
Okay, that's it for now. Good night.
